Michael Franti, ex-Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, and his latest band, Spearhead, are, surely, the modern-day successors to Gil Scott Heron in their uncompromising political, and pacifist, stance against the US establishment
I had the great pleasure of seeing the band play at Glasgow Uni a couple of years back, and was mightily impressed at the quality of his songwriting, which covers rock’n roll, rap, hip-hop, accoustic ballads, love songs, stories, protest songs, and all sortsa inspirational stuff.
Michael’s film, “I Know I’m Not Alone”, www.myspace.com/iknowimnotalone details his visit to the streets of Iraq, where he busked with an accoustic guitar to anyone who would listen … be they soldiers, insurgents, kids, or whatever. The resulting film, and the music he produces, are awesome!!
